with respect to the compiz-problem:

cd /path/to/maple/
mv jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX/ jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX.old
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX

respectively your arch instead of IBM_INTEL_LINUX.
if needed, the jre.IBM_INTEL_LINUX.old dir can also be deleted (~90MB).
