… wah sudah hampir setahun tidak pernah diisi…

Saya membaca cukup banyak pasokan RSS di Google Reader saya, dengan kisaran topik dari yang berbau komputer, situs nggak penting, surat pembaca, beberapa blogger terkenal, dan blog teman-temin saya. Salah satu pasokan RSS blog yang saya ikuti adalah dari DailySocial.

Lewat situs tersebut, perkembangan dan berita teknologi informasi terutama di Indonesia dapat selalu saya ikuti. Berbagai perusahaan perintis yang berkecimpung di dunia maya dilaporkan oleh para penulisnya. Perkembangan dunia web di luar negeri pun juga dilaporkan. Pokoknya, enak deh.

Namun dulu ada yang selalu mengganggu saya saat membaca berita di DailySocial: salah eja dan mencampur bahasa. Dua hal yang mungkin jarang diperhatikan orang. Pernah suatu saat, karena bete-nya, saya lontarkan di Twitter. Screenshoot atau screenshot? Mozzila atau Mozilla? ‘anda’ atau ‘Anda’?

Mungkin banyak yang tidak tahu, beberapa peramban sudah menyediakan fitur pengecek ejaan yang tersedia saat kita menulis di kotak isian teks. Jika diaktifkan (dan ada juga yang pengaturan bawaannya sudah aktif), kata-kata yang tidak sesuai dengan kamus pengecek ejaannya ditandai dengan garis bawah merah. Kita cukup mengklik kanan dengan tetikus pada kata yang digarisbawahi dan menu konteks akan ditampilkan dengan pilihan kata yang mungkin lebih sesuai ejaannya.

Mencampur bahasa adalah masalah lainnya. Tidak dapat disangkal, di dunia teknologi informasi khususnya di dunia web, orang di Indonesia lebih suka banyak menggunakan aplikasi dan membaca situs dalam Bahasa Inggris dibandingkan Bahasa Indonesia: Facebook, Google, Multiply, Yahoo! Mail dan Messenger. Istilah men-download, men-delete, mem-posting, dsb, sudah terlalu menjamur. Mungkin tidak banyak yang tahu atau peduli, penulisan istilah asing dalam bahasa tulisan seharusnya ditulis dengan cetak miring.

Akhir-akhir ini, saya perhatikan DailySocial sudah memperbaiki masalah tersebut. Bahasa asing sudah ditulis dengan cetak miring, salah eja yang lebih sedikit. Tulisan menjadi lebih enak dibaca, dan tidak membuat hati jadi bete, hehehe.

Firefox Indonesia and HTTP Error 501

If you are using Firefox Indonesian version and getting HTTP error 501 Not Implemented on some websites, here is an info.

The culprit lies on the modsecurity installation on Apache webserver. The rules are:

For modsecurity 2.5.10 (tested), using Core ModSecurity Rule Set ver.2.0.3: Rule id 958885 on modsecurity_crs_40_generic_attacks.conf around line 253 (254?)
For modsecurity 2.1.7 (tested) using Core ModSecurity Rule Set ver.1.5.1: Rule id 950006 on modsecurity_crs_40_generic_attacks.conf around line 105-108

Workarounds:

For modsecurity 2.5.10, workaround is to disable rule id 958885 in file modsecurity_crs_40_generic_attacks.conf
For modsecurity 2.1.7 with core rules ver 1.5.1, workaround is to remove string “|id” (yes, remove that pipe character also) on the regular expression of rule 950006 in file modsecurity_crs_40_generic_attacks.conf

Tested using:

Web browser:
- Firefox 3.6 (Localized version: Indonesia, nightly build) using following User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; id; rv:1.9.2b5pre) Gecko/20091126 Namoroka/3.6b5pre
- Firefox 3.6 (Localized version: Indonesia) on other platforms (win32 and linux)
- Released versions: Firefox 3.5, Firefox 3.0 (Localized version: Indonesia)
- wget -U “Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; id)”.
Webserver:
- CentOS 5.4 on VirtualBox, using compiled Apache (2.2.14) and compiled Modsecurity (2.1.7)
- Fedora 10 on VirtualBox, using Apache RPM (2.2.11-2.fc10) and Modsecurity RPM (2.5.10-2.fc10)

FreSh Jumat malam kemarin adalah acara pertama saya sebagai anggota komunitas Mozilla untuk tampil sebagai pembicara. Topik yang saya presentasikan adalah tentang sekitar Mozilla Firefox Indonesia dalam hubungannya dengan penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia di Internet. Satu pertanyaan yang mengganjal di pikiran saya selama ini saya keluarkan: mengapa butuh Bahasa Inggris hanya untuk ber-Internet ria?

Tentu saja, menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia dalam perangkat lunak/gadget/situs web s*cks. Although it s*cks for you, maybe it won’t s*ck the other. If you don’t like it, don’t use it . Stop complaining, start to care for other Indonesian people, won’t you?. The web is not only for you, that’s all.

Why English in Websites?

There are 2 websites mentioned on Okto’s blog (hell yeah, I read those entries at Planet Terasi every day). And I also have take a look at another 2 websites, 2.0 slogan included or a tweet-like functionality expanded.

A friend of mine stares at me when I logon to Facebook with Indonesian user interface. She laughs when she saw my Facebook. You probably heard the term “unduh” lately. Why (not) Bahasa Indonesia?

This question is always popping out of my mind everytime I take a look for Indonesian websites. Is this a cost of <insert Microsoft Windows term here> monoculture (pirate version included) or we are just lazy using computer terms in Indonesian? How many of you installed Indonesian LIP for Windows XP or Vista?

My first highly unscientific guess is that English term is always shorter and we hear it everytime, we saw it everytime, so we use it everytime, and get stuck with it. Even now as early as elementary school. How many elementary students know what is “ponsel“? They call it using its “English” abbreviation, spelled in Indonesian way. Heck, even English people call it “cell phone” or “mobile”, people in Germany call them “handy“, and French are using “portable“.

And then another questions pop out. Are we:

using English because the developer of the website is only know the common UI words for the website in English? (Home, Login, Search, Register, About Us, Back, Top, bla bla bla..)
using English because the target user is the people that already familiar with English websites and using Bahasa Indonesia is just too weird, and make use of it will slowdown our speed to socialize?
using English because we don’t really care who is the target user and we don’t really care as long as I got my job done
using Bahasa Indonesia is not “cool” enough, doesn’t attract people?
promoting English first, Indonesian second?

Why am I complaining? I even wrote this in my poor English.
Maybe I’m OMDO, I don’t have any stat here, do I?
